The Austrian cellist Katharina Weißenbacher received her first cello lessons at the age of six and soon decided to become a professional musician. She studied at the renowned Music Academy in Cologne and the Music Academy in Würzburg (Germany), the Accademia z Glasbo v Ljubljani (Slovenia) and recently at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Switzerland).

She attended master classes of Wolfgang Boettcher, Natalia Gutman, David Geringas, Antonio Meneses, Enrico Dindo, Wen-Sinn Yang, and more. Claudius Herrmann, Katharina Troe and Josef Luitz were also highly influential on her musical development. After receiving her concert diploma from the Music Academy in Cologne (2007), she was admitted (by unanimous consent) to the post-diploma course "Meisterklasse" at the Music Academy of Würzburg. At the same time, she studied Music Pedagogy and received the "Meisterklassendiplom" in 2009 and her diploma in Music Pedagogy in 2010. In 2010, she moved to Switzerland where she continued her studies with Orfeo Mandozzi and later with Claudius Herrmann at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Master of Performance Orchestra). In 2012 she finished her master recital with distinction.

She won numerous competitions such as the Bundeswettbewerb "Prima La Musica", Young Soloists 2000, and the International Music Festival Allegro vivo, as a Soloist and as a chamber musician. She also won awards for the cooperation with Modern Dance, acting, and jazz.

Katharina Weißenbacher is particularly interested in jazz. During her studies in Zürich, she took lessons with Daniel Pezzotti at the Zürich Jazz School. Since then performed research on the topic "Jazz in the GDR" and did her doctoral studies from 2012 to 2018 at the University of Art in Graz. Her dissertation "Jazz under the control of the system – The development of jazz in the GDR after the Wall was built" was published in 2020 in the series "Jazz Under State Socialism" by Peter Lang Verlag. Katharina Weißenbacher is a regular speaker at international conferences, is a member of "Radio Jazz Research" and has published her first publications. Her current research topic is "Women and Jazz in Switzerland". Moreover, she is involved in the Swiss Jazzorama, the only jazz archive in Switzerland, and the Uster Jazz Club.

In 2011 she did an internship at the orchestra of the Zurich Opera, where she also played as so-called "Zuzügerin" from 2012 to 2015. In 2017 she founded the Segantini Trio together with Jürg Hanselmann (piano) and Franco Mettler (clarinet). Moreover, she regularly performs with the pianist Lisa-Maria Schachtschneider.

Katharina Weißenbacher lives in Siebnen SZ with her husband and her two sons and teaches cello at the music school in Freienbach and at the Kantonsschule Sargans.
